Westin Salishan Lodge
Salishan Lodge is a 205 room resort in Gleneden Beach, Oregon. At peak season, over 3,000 meals are prepared each day. Approximately one and one half years ago, the lodge underwent renovations. One of the main targets was the kitchens feeding hungry lodgers. The kitchens were, at the time, being serviced by several small, passive grease traps. According to Bill Welsh, the chief engineer of the Lodge, this existing pretreatment system was woefully inadequate for this kind of commercial application.

"We were having to call out the rooter guys with their high-powered water cleaners to blast their way through our clogged pipes. A costly affair. It was also getting to be a headache trying to find the low man on the totem pole to get down inside and clean the traps out each week," says Welsh. They also had problems with fouled air from the traps getting into the ventilation system. "It was not very pleasant smelling that stuff in our dining rooms."
Another problem Salishan dealt with was that of location. While the Lodge enjoys a breathtaking location by the sea, it is also 500 yards upstream of the local waste water treatment plant. "They were having grease problems of their own," says Welsh. "They knew exactly where the grease was coming from." Consequently, the plant began to chide the Lodge to take action.
Fortunately, a local contact recommended Bill check out the BIG DIPPER® Pretreatment Systems. Welsh was impressed, and installed two BIG DIPPER® W-750-AST's (Product Catalog) into his operation. Since the installation, they have no longer had any problems with grease. They no longer have to deal with blockages, odors, or finding someone to clean out their grease traps. "I like to get down there and maintain them myself. I'm the chief engineer and could get anyone to do it. However, I consider them 'my babies.' Maintenance is a piece of cake."
